The Pygmy Connection

Club Focus:  Our fun phrase is “to promote the goat.”   Most club members have a pygmy goat project - which entails a project book, Skillathon (knowledge of your goat) in late July, and the pygmy goat show at the Geauga County Fair.  We also encourage our members to do another project through our club.  Some examples from the past and present are horses, mentoring, photography, meat chickens, archery, swine, bicycling, meat goats, beef, rabbits, and fancy chickens.  There are even more things you can do.

The Pygmy Connection has been represented well at the Fair.  Our members have won the all breed Showmanship Sweepstakes, Grand and Reserve Champion Chickens, Reserve Champion Boer Goat, and had projects judged eligible for the Ohio State Fair.  We even have some of our members on the Geauga County Jr. Fairboard and Geauga County Jr. Leaders.  We don’t just show pygmy goats! Your interest would be welcome here.

Where the Club Meets: Our hope is to meet on Saturdays at 4 P.M.  at the Claridon Town Hall.

Advisors: We have two co-advisors: Bob Barber and Traci Snode.  Bob Barber has been raising pygmy goats for 8 years and is a registered pygmy goat judge.  Bob is also the Jr. Fair Pygmy Goat Coordinator.  Traci Snode started out as a club member’s mom and because of her leadership skills rose to advisor.  She also has expertise in horses and is on the 4-H Advisory Committee.  As you can see, we are a very diverse bunch.

New Members choose a “Goat Guide,” a member with at least two years experience, to help them during their first year.

Activities: Every year we participate in the Clean Up Geauga program.  This entails cleaning elderly people’s yards who reside in Geauga County.  For fun, every year we go to Punderson and camp out.  One of our club member’s fathers makes a great turkey boy-scout style.  The club members also go swimming, hiking, and play together.  Some other things we have done in the past are car washes, setting up the Walk for the Cure, involvement in a local parade or two, and visiting nursing homes with baby pygmy goats.

How to Join: Contact either Bob Barber (440- 286- 5019) or Traci Snode (440-564- 1110).
